My notes

Third viewing, first in theater, second after the war on dvd, third Criteron blu-ray

It might have been because I was younger, but I think I liked this movie more when I was fresh back from the war. The cinematography is still gorgeous - keeping Malick as my favorite director for that stunning sort of dreamlike effect.

It was the philosophical elements that fell short for me on this viewing. That and the idea that the leaders were just there to do their thing, to get an accomplishment that they could then use to get promoted. Might need to rewatch and re-appraise.
